I appreciate you writing this piece as I frustrate myself when I find y phone in my hands without even realising I’m doing it. I have no need to pick it up so many times in the day and need better habits.
I relate to that so much it’s almost automatic. The fact that you’re noticing it is already a huge first step. Awareness usually comes before better habits.
This was a good article! I really appreciate the practical step, because it's something I need to try. I've been of IG and FB for a few weeks, but Medium and Substack have just replaced the urge to check. I'll give the 10 min trick a try.
I love this piece. Very informative also providing a solution! I definitely struggle with phone addiction (some days more than others) and i notice on the days when i don’t look at my phone first thing in the morning i have an easier time throughout the rest of the day!
System 1 is fast, reflexive, quick to make judgments, habitual responses. A lot of dopamine answers.
System 2 is slower, deliberate, actively thought through and chosen.
We usually identify ourselves as our system 2 self, but most of us let our system 1 do most of the answers.
I wrestled (and it is sometimes a fight) most of my thought and responses into system 2, and am much happier that way though it has strains, since it is more involved and complicated thought, it’s not as easy to handle multiple small tasks, and responses are slower much to the consternation of very impatient (heavy system 1 use) people
I love that connection. The phone pull really does feel like System 1 running the show. Shifting into System 2 even briefly can feel slower, but it’s definitely more intentional. Thanks for adding that perspective.
Great article - called out 99% of people
Glad it resonated with you!!

That’s such a real observation we often don’t remove the urge, we just redirect it. I’d love to hear how the 10-minute trick works for you.

That morning shift makes such a difference, right? The first few minutes really set the tone for the entire day.
Such an interesting read and useful practical tips are greatly appreciated . Thank you
I’m so glad the practical steps resonated. I always try to pair awareness with something actionable. Thanks for reading!
There’s a book: Thinking Fast and Slow
It outlines 2 styles of thought all of us have.
System 1 is fast, reflexive, quick to make judgments, habitual responses. A lot of dopamine answers.
System 2 is slower, deliberate, actively thought through and chosen.
We usually identify ourselves as our system 2 self, but most of us let our system 1 do most of the answers.

Interesting read… but makes total sense.
Sometimes the most uncomfortable habits are the ones that make the most sense once we see them clearly.
